Notes from Paris: A Visit to Révélations 2025
In May 2025, I had the opportunity to visit Révélations, the fine craft and international biennial, held once again at the historic Grand Palais in Paris. The event brought together a wide range of artisans and designers from around the world, offering a thoughtful look at contemporary craft and material innovation.
The variety of work on display was notable, spanning from traditional techniques to more experimental approaches. Lighting design, in particular, caught my attention. Many of the creators explored translucency, texture, and layering in ways that blurred the boundaries between utility and art. I’m hoping to integrate some of these pieces into some projects in the future.
There was also an interesting focus on unusual materials, including feathers, seaweed, silicone, and porcelain. It was clear that the event wasn’t just about celebrating craftsmanship, but also about pushing the limits of what materials and techniques can do today.
During the visit, I had a chance to meet briefly with members of the Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), who were representing a group of seven Irish makers at the event. Ireland has now officially been names Country of honour for the next Révélations in 2027. This is a fantastic moment to highlight Irish craft on an international stage.
I’m looking forward to seeing how Ireland’s makers and their stories are presented at this important showcase.

Overall, the event was an inspiring exploration of craft today. It felt less like a commercial fair and more like a curated conversation about materials, process, and creativity. Meeting some of the artisans and discussing the value of craftmanship was a thoughtful reminder of how craft continues to adapt and find relevance in contemporary design.
